Sexual misconduct policies confusing for administrators

Student protesters of Donald Trump at the Cy-Hawk tailgates Saturday were met with a protest of their own when a woman ripped one of the protester's posters after saying a racist comment.

The poster, held by Jovani Rubio, read “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.” Rubio was protesting against Trump's comments on undocumented immigrants, saying it was personal because he and his siblings are “anchor babies” born in America while his mother was an undocumented immigrant.

During the protest, a woman wearing an ISU shirt stepped up to Rubio and ripped his poster in half. Before ripping it, she mentions voting for white supremacy. [Read more]

Kellogg also said fraternity Beta Theta Pi is also pending investigation but would not say where the fraternity is in the investigation process. [Read more]

In memoriam: Students gather on Central Campus to honor Tong Shao

I worked closely with one of my new reporters to cover the disappearance of an Iowa State international student. The woman was reported missing a week after friends had last heard from her. The day the police released information, I contacted two friends who had known her and thought the situation was suspicious.

Three weeks after friends last heard from her, her body was found in the trunk of a car. My reporter and I worked to cover all of the follow-up stories on the difficult case that included Chinese students wary of talking to the media and the main person of interest who had returned to China. About 1 in 10 ISU students, or 9.7 percent, have experienced a form of sexual misconduct, a campus climate survey released Monday shows.

Almost 20 percent of ISU female undergraduates have experienced a form of sexual misconduct. Iowa State participated in an Association of American Universities campus climate survey on sexual assault.

During a three-week period in April 2015, 5,200 out of the 32,794 ISU students, or 15.8 percent, took the survey, according to the report.

“This is a landmark type of survey," said Robinette Kelley, Director of Equal Opportunities Office at Iowa State. "It included 27 institutions, 26 of which were AAU institutions. It has never been done before." [Read more]
