Special Sections

Hoops is the second edition of the Iowa State Daily's magazine on the men's and women's basketball program at Iowa State. We brought back the first edition from a special section the organization had done a few decades ago. ISU has a large fan base for the basketball programs, and we had the idea to tailor content to something we knew our readers wanted.

The second edition is more than 80 pages, 30 more pages than the first. It features some of the best reporting our organization does and narrative stories on everyone involved in the men's and women's teams.

As managing editor, I headed the 2-month project along with our sports and assistant sports editors. I create presentations to help our sports staff dip their toes in feature writing andr worked with them to edit multiple drafts of the stories. I also worked with our photographers to get art to accompany the articles and worked with designers on page design.

I then had 48 hours to proof all of the content and create headlines for the stories before we sent the product to the printer. In addition, I had to proof the award-winning website one of our students had created and promoted and helped distribute the product. [Read more]

Holidaily is our special section that comes out at the beginning of every December. The content centers on the upcoming holiday season. It includes gift guides, recipes and stories on holiday traditions and all different religious celebrations.

I helped edit the content for this magazine and worked with our photo department and page designers to lay out each page. I helped redesign half of the publication, as well.

We also put out a Renter's Guide and Career Guide during the fall semester.

In the beginning of February we will put out our first ever special sections magazine on diversity. It will cover topics on descrimination as it relates to racism, religious descrimination, homophobia, disabilities and more. It will also profile prominent members and organizations within the ISU community who have made a positive impact on diversity.

Another larger project we will do in the spring will be a campaign on diversity where we will hold events and write stories that engage our audience.
